It’s 2 a.m. and you’re cramming for a final exam tomorrow. You’ve been up for 48 hours straight, and you’re running on nothing but coffee and gummy bears. You’re dying to get some much-needed shut-eye, but your final waits for no one. And so you stay up and study, knowing that you’re sacrificing your health and wellbeing in order to pass the test.
Now, consider this radical alternative: You put yourself first.
With a heavy course load and all those extracurriculars, it might sound impossible. But trust us: it’s not as difficult as you might think. By developing strategies to manage stress and prioritize your own health and wellness, you’ll probably be more fulfilled and feel more accomplished in each aspect of your life.
There are so many ways to maintain a happier, healthier and more functional you that also care for the planet.
Here’s our 6-step guide to optimal wellness this fall:
- Eat well. Fuel your body with necessary nutrients. You are what you eat, and eating healthy, FLOSN (fresh, local, organic, seasonal, non-GMO) foods means you and the planet will be much better off.
- Look for holistic alternatives. Before you turn to Big Pharma medications with negative side-effects and environmental impacts, consider natural remedies and preventive self-care.
- Study smart. Turn off your phone and internet, and you’ll be surprised what you can accomplish. Use the time you save to sleep or hang with friends!
- Get your zzzzz’s. Sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mind and body, hands down. [More on sleep later next week!]
- Follow your bliss. Take time to do something that relaxes you and brings you joy and peace of mind. Whether that’s yoga, meditation, giving yourself a mini-facial, going for a walk, or playing frisbee in the quad, take some time to do something that’s just for you.
- Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness means being present and fully aware of your experiences and the world around you. It has been proven to help manage stress, increase memory and attention, fight depression and anxiety, and even boost the immune system. As Buddhist meditation master Kalu Rinpoche says, “It is right mindfulness and attention that allows us to change our behavior.”
Change starts with you. So, are you ready to be — and stay — well this school year? To help, check out our collection of eco-friendly wellness products below. Consider this your toolkit for staying healthy, mindful, and present no matter how much stress school may bring.
