Stepping out at school this fall, you’re undoubtedly going to want to put your best foot forward. But before you reach for your favorite lotion or shave gel, have you ever stopped to wonder what’s actually in those products? Unfortunately, the answer is often harmful ingredients.
Download TG’s Back-to-School Checklist here.
Check the labels on your conventional body care products, and you’re sure to find a list of unpronounceable, untested toxic chemicals, colors, and fragrances. Chances are, the majority of the ingredients listed (Diethyl Phthalate, Triclosan, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine to name a few) are not good for you or the planet.
Many of the synthetic ingredients in our body care products grew out of the World War II chemical revolution. Sodium lauryl sulfate, for example, is an industrial cleanser and “foaming agent” that’s also common in engine degreasers. It has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and is a known hormone disruptor. You’re putting that on your head just to create a little extra lather, and lather doesn’t even translate to cleaner hair in the first place!
Surely, if a product is widely available for public consumption, it must be safe. Right? Wrong.
The FDA, or any other federal agency, does not conduct pre-market testing of body products. That means the majority of the 80,000 ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products have not even been approved by any governing body for safety.
Compared to the almost 1,400 harmful chemicals banned in Europe, only 11 toxic ingredients have been banned in the United States.
As a result of this lack of oversight, it’s easy to be misled by products claiming to be “natural,” “herbal,” or even “organic,” when this isn’t actually the case. This is called “greenwashing,” making a product sound healthy and natural when its ingredients tell a whole different story.
With all this in mind, let’s do some math: Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs much of everything you put on it. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, states that on average, women use 12 personal care products daily, while men use an average of six. This means that when you use conventional products, you could be absorbing dozens, even hundreds of harmful ingredients through your skin.
So how do you find shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, shave cream, lotion, sunscreen and the many products you use daily that are actually safe? Fortunately, there are plenty of ethical companies who make products void of toxic ingredients. Our partners Acure Organics, Dr. Bronner’s, Natracare and Everyone, for example, formulate products using the safest, highest quality ingredients they can source.
Swap your conventional products for conscious ones this school year, and you’ll keep your body clean and the planet green!
Our advice: read the labels, understand what you’re putting on your skin and opt for a healthier alternative. Check out our top picks below!
